How It Works

Signfy documents can be sent to anyone with a Singpass account for signing.

Signify is available to all Singapore government agencies and public healthcare institutions. These have been automatically whitelisted and there is no need to request for access.

A digital signature is a type of electronic signature created using asymmetric or public key cryptography. Unlike traditional signatures, digital signatures are not directly visible on electronic records (e.g. a PDF of the contract). Instead, a cryptographic hash is embedded within the record itself. However, a visual representation is often included when the record is printed.

Digital signatures ensure the integrity of an electronic record. If the record is altered or tampered with in any way, the digital signature becomes invalid because the cryptographic integrity is compromised. Conversely, if the record remains unchanged, the signature remains valid.

The integrity of digital signatures can easily be verified via standard PDF document readers, which will check that the document has not been modified since it was signed.

In Singapore, digital signatures may either be regarded as ordinary electronic signatures (OES) or secure electronic signatures (SES). Signify utilises Sign with Singpass which is recognised as an SES. 

Secure Electronic Signatures (SES) benefit from legal presumptions under Singapore law. This shifts the burden of proof to the counterparty to show that: (i) the signature is not theirs; (ii) they did not intend to sign the document; or (iii) the document was altered after signing.

In short, the counterparty (who allegedly signed) will be presumed to have signed the document unless they can prove otherwise. 

Under the Electronics Transaction Act, the following are excluded:

1. The creation or execution of a will
2. The creation, performance or enforcement of an indenture, declaration of trust or power of attorney, with the exception of implied, constructive and resulting trusts and a lasting power of attorney defined under section 2(1) of the Mental Capacity Act 2008
3. Any contract for the sale or other disposition of immovable property, or any interest in such property
4. The conveyance of immovable property or the transfer of any interest in immovable property

To maintain transparency, the document owner's email address is visible to recipients regardless of how the document is shared:

• Email Mode: Your email address is included in the initial notification email and displayed on the pre-login document summary page.
• Link Mode: Your email address is displayed on the pre-login document summary page.

Signify can handle up to Restricted and Sensitive Normal data.
